Private Practice Consultation for Therapists
This was taken right after my last school-based therapy session in 2012. I had been working on building my private practice for a few months and I had finally gotten to the point financially where I felt a little more comfortable leaving my agency job. (Also, my husband help to push me to do it)
For years, I had an insurance-based practice, I worked afternoons, late evenings, and Saturdays. It was okay for a while.
But my life changed.
I became a mom and my priority was spending more time with my kids. I knew I needed to change my office hours.
I remember being nervous that I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. Would parents really bring their kids to see me in the mornings and early afternoons?
I kept my Saturday office hours just in case, but then eventually stopped that as well. I wanted my weekends to be with my kids, go to the birthday parties, and take them to the playground and I did.
Then again my life changed.
I received the scariest news – I had breast cancer. Thankfully, I was one of the lucky ones – caught it early and got the treatment I needed and I am okay.
However, that was the big push I needed to make my next big jump to a private pay practice. I did not want to wait any longer to offer therapy services the way I wanted based on my training and I was tired of being limited by the insurance company’s rules.
I also saw that the lifestyle I had always wanted for myself and my family could not wait any more, because life is short.
About six months later, I got off all the insurance panels and became a private pay practice.
Soon after that, I moved into my dream office in March of 2020!!
But guess what? My practice thrived and continues to do so.
I learned a lot, about what helped, what did not work, and was inspired by others’ success stories.
I have found it rewarding to inspire others, after all, we do become therapists to help others and empower them to reach their goals.
The perks of achieving success also involve being in a better position to help others.
It can be intimidating and overwhelming to make the leap from agency work to private practice, from group practice to solo practice, from insurance to private pay.
There are so many logistics involved, so much to think about, marketing, billing, social media, networking, and finding a niche.
Change can be scary but you do not have to do navigate it alone.
