Alejandra Rizo, LMFT
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Alejandra’s interest in psychology started when she saw her older brother struggling with learning disabilities. This inspired her to study psychology to help families and children with special needs.
When she obtained her Masters’ in Marriage and Family Therapy she discovered her passion for helping individuals and their families, by focusing on family dynamics and relationships in the healing and strengthening process.
THERAPY FOR CHILDREN
Alejandra has worked with children, adolescents, and families for the past 10 years. She uses an attachment-based approach in her work with her young clients and their families, strengthening the relationship between parent and child.
She has extensive experience in working with children ages 0-6 and focuses on the Parent-Child dynamic. As a mother, she understands the challenges of parenting at different stages. She guides and supports parents on their parenting journey, giving them the tools to connect with their children’s emotional needs.
Alejandra has training in both Play Therapy and Art Therapy and understands the importance of offering these more experiential and developmentally appropriate treatment modalities allowing children to communicate and process their feelings and learn new coping skills.
ADOLESCENTS & YOUNG ADULTS
For adolescents and young adults struggling with anxiety, depression, OCD, low self-esteem, and balancing school/work and life, Alejandra uses REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy), which goes a step further than CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) to address not only the irrational thoughts that lead to behaviors but also the core belief. This allows for deeper and more long-lasting improvements in the overall mood and quality of life of her clients.
FAMILIES & COUPLES
Alejandra offers family and couples therapy to those looking to improve the family system and the relationship as a couple and as parents. Alejandra uses her attachment theory lens to explore the attachment styles that are affecting the couple’s relationship. She believes that having a sense of each individual’s childhood allows for the healing of wounds from the past that are affecting or causing distress in their present lives.
She specializes in the Gottman Method which aims at improving communication; increasing intimacy, respect, and affection; identifying what is making the couple feel “stuck” while also creating a sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.
Due to her experience in the field of Industrial Psychology where her clients were business professionals needing help managing stressful situations relating to their work environment, (relationships, communication, teamwork, and personal and professional goals), she has a deeper understanding of the impact of work demands have on the working parent’s well-being and their families.
